Sen. Sakamoto Congratulates Hawaii for its Race to the Top Victory

Honolulu — Sen. Norman Sakamoto, chair of the Education and Housing Committee, commends Hawaii in winning a $75 million grant in the second phase of the Race to the Top competition. Hawaii is among 9 other states and the District of Columbia awarded money from the Obama Administration’s groundbreaking education reform program in this round.

“Race to the Top” awards money to states that show that they have a plan for school reforms in four main areas: turning around low performing schools, adopting college and career ready standards, effective teachers and principals, and using data systems to support student achievement.

In response to the announcement, Sen. Sakamoto released the following statement:

“Winning a Race to the Top validates Hawaii’s plan that maps out systemic education reforms. This is a transformational step toward better educational outcomes for all Hawaii’s children.”

“Our committee has led the effort to pass several bills to ensure that the quality of educational workforce continues to improve and will strengthen Hawaii’s ability to implement the reforms laid out in our application.”

“I am proud of the DOE and private sector committees who worked tirelessly worked on improving our application for the second round of Race to the Top. Congratulations to all!”

A team of individuals were committed to Hawaii’s application to Race to the top. They include: Kathy Matayoshi, department of education interim superintendent; Tammi Oyadomari-Chun, executive director of Hawaii P-20 Partnerships for Education, Kamehameha Schools, the Castle Foundation and a legion of workers at the Department of Education.

Sen. Sakamoto has been serving the State of Hawaii as a legislator for the past 14 years. He has been chairman of the Senate Committee on Education and Housing for the past ten years. Sen. Sakamoto is also a member of the Higher Education and Commerce and Consumer Protection Committees.

Sen. Sakamoto is available for interviews.
